The ParishThe parish of Charlton Abbots lies in northern central Gloucestershire about 6 miles east of the town of Chelteneham. Charlton Abbots sits roughly 3 miles north of the A436 road which connects Gloucester through to Bourton on the Water. There is very little to Charlton Kings, little more than hamlet of farms and cottages sitting on the western slopes of a valley within the Cotswolds. Most of the properties lies along a short stretch of dead-end roadlying off the lane from Brockhampton to Winchcombe. Like many small hamlets this would have been a farming community, sheep were the dominant land use but nowadays with modern machinery & fertilisers arable predominates. Charlton Abbots is drained northwards by the Beesmoor Brook which shortly joins the River Isbourne, the latter joins the Avon at Evesham and then the Severn, doubling back south to reach the sea through the Bristol Channel. Charlton Abbots is sited at 190 metres above the sea in strongly rolling limestone countryside, land rises westwards to reach the scarp at 326 metres on Cleeve Common. Charlton Abbots parish was fairly typically sized for its area, covering just under 1,400 acres it would have supported a population of close to 100 parishioners. In Domesday time it was a holding of Winchcombe Abbey, equally small offering just 5 ploughs, a small meadow but did possess a mill. |

Plain unruled book a continuation of the extant composite register | Grade 3 Register - there are sufficient quality issues with this register to indicate that some misreads will occur albeit few in number | The register has records scattered through the Baptisms and burials as well as a separate marriage sequence making for a possibility of omission, the register is also faded making for a possibility of misreads but hopefully they will be few in number |
