The ParishThe parish of Coaley is located in the southern part of central Gloucestershire. Coaley lies about 3 miles northeast of the market town of Dursley on the edge of the Cotswolds. Coaley is a compact village sited in lanes about 2 miles east of the busy A38 (Bristol to Gloucester) road and its modern counterpart the M5. Both of those roads follow the edge of the plain containing the River Severn, Coaley sits a little above that plain on the slopes which gradually rise to the foot of the steep Cotswold escarpment. This area was traditionally used for pastoral farming and there is much of that taking place still although arable has grown as a proportion of the landuse. Coaley is sited at around 40 metres above sea level although land rises to the east onto the Cotswolds at over 230 metres above the sea. Coaley parish was of a typical size for a Cotswold parish at almost 2,500 acres it supported a high population of nearly 1,000 parishioners. In Domesday times the parish was also large, it was held directly by the King, and it supported some 42 ploughs and an impressive 10 mills making it a rather wealthy place. |
