The Parish

The parish of Kings Pyon lies in central Herefordshire about 2 miles southeast of the large village of Weobley and 8 miles northwest of the city of Hereford. King's Pyon is a small and compact village lying in lanes just west of the A4110 road which links Hereford with Leintwardine. Kings Pyon lies in an attractive agricultural area of Herefordshire with many orchards (cider production is big around here) around the parish and neighbouring areas. Kings Pyon is largely built around a north-south running lane which parallels the nearby main road. The heart of Kings Pyon lies in the valley of the Washington Brook which heads eastwards to join the River Lugg at Moreton-on-Lugg. The village is sited at around 100 metres above sea level and slopes around are gentle and rise only another 30 metres to the highest tops. Kings Pyon parish is rather typically sized for Herefordshire, at just over 2,400 acres it supported around 420 parishioners. In Domesday times the land was held by one Roger of Lacy and could boast 11 ploughs.


The Church

St Mary's church sits on the eastern side of the lane and in the south of the village as the lane rises from the Washington Brook. The church is a rather ancient one with extensive architecture form the Norman period which gives its date as 12th century for the majority of the fabric. Both nave and chancel date from this period, the exception being the western tower which Pevsner dates to the late 14th century. The nave and transepts were also re-roofed during the 14th century. St Mary's sits in quite an elevated site protected by a low stone wall, access is from a short spur off the main lane where parking can be found. Whilst there are a few trees photographic opportunities are not unduly restricted.
