The ParishThe parish of Woolhope lies in eastern Herefordshire roughly 8 miles southeast of the county town of Hereford and not too far from the border with neighbouring Gloucestershire. Woolhope sits a little over 2 miles east of the B4224 road which connects Hereford through to Mitcheldean in Gloucestershire. Woolhope is a small and compact village which sits within a valley west of the prominent ridge of Marcle Hill in rolling pastoral farmland. The area is largely devoted to beef cattle with pastures interspersed with the cider orchards for which this area of the county is known. The parish is distinguished from most within the county by the presence of ancient Silurian rocks rather than the characteristic red sandstones which underlie much of the county. Woolhope is drained northwestwards by small stream which head for the confluence of Rivers Lugg & Wye, the latter then heads south to reach the outer Bristol Channel through the port of Chepstow. Woolhope is sited at around 110 metres above the sea surrounded to both east and west by hills rising to close to 200 metres, rather hilly for its county. Woolhope parish was one of the larger within a county of small parishes, covering just over 4,100 acres it would have supported a population of around 800 parishioners, the village itself holding just over half of that number. In Domesday times Woolhope was held by the Canons of St Peter, Hereford and was home to a incredible 42 ploughs as well as the usual meadows and woodland, its assets and population at that time made it one of the largest 20% of settlements recorded in that tome, a contrast to today's quiet village. |
