The ParishThe parish of Ardeley lies slightly northeast of central Hertfordshire about 5 miles northeast of the new town of Stevenage. Ardeley sits, in lanes about a mile south of the B1037 road which connects Stevenage with Buntingford. The village name has changed from time to time it is also known as Yardley but Ardeley is the current preferred spelling. Despite Hertfordshire's proximity to the capital the area around Ardeley is surprisingly rural, a network of minor and narrow lanes with small fields, nowadays mainly arable but at the time of this transcript a mixture of cereal and pastoral farming. Ardeley is drained southwestwards by tributaries of the infant River Beane, forming part of the Lea at Hertford it flows through eastern London to meet the North Sea through the Thames Estuary. Ardeley is sited at around 120 metres above the sea and sits on almost the highest portion of land hereabouts local heights rise to barely 10 metres higher within a few miles. Ardeley parish was fairly typically sized for its area, covering just over 2,400 acres it would have supported a population of around 600 parishioners. In Domesday times Ardeley was a relatively small place, held by the Canons of St Paul's London it offered 8 ploughs together with small meadows & woodland. |
