The ParishThe parish of Bury lies in eastern Huntingdonshire close to its border with neighbouring Cambridgeshire, indeed nowadays it has been incorporated into that county. Bury lies about 6 miles west of the Cambridgeshire market town of Chatteris, in Huntingdonshire portion of The Fens. Bury is situated on the B1040 road which runs across The Fens from Warboys to Whittlesey, it is nowadays almost contiguous with Ramsey its larger neighbour. The two settlements are appropriately joined as Bury was formerly held by Ramsey Abbey. The two are built along a low ridge of land extending into the reclaimed areas around whilst they rise 10 to 20 metres above the sea level, the land around is barely at and in some cases below the level of the sea with extensively drained fields created as part of the great draining of the Fens by Vermuiden and his associates. Most of the water drainage, hereabouts, has been altered if not created by man but that drainage heads northwards to join the River Nene and eventually flows into The Wash, with a little help from man. Bury parish is rather small in extent, for a Fenland parish, as drained lands were retained by its larger neighbour, but still supported around 360 parishioners. There is no specific mention of Bury in Domesday book, it is presumed that it was detailed within the entry for Ramsey. |
