The ParishThe parish of Water Newton lies in the extreme northwest of Huntingdonshire, indeed it forms part of the border with neighbouring Northamptonshire. Water Newton is located about 5 miles west of the Northamptonshire city of Peterborough. Water Newton is a small and compact village sitting just to the north of the A1 (London to Edinburgh) road, in coaching days this would have passed through the village but now sweeps as a busy dual carriageway just to Water Newton's south. Water Newton consist of a single street (The Old North Road) of properties on the southern banks of the River Nene. At the time of this transcript Water Newton would have earned its living from arable farming as well quarrying for the local limestone for building. The Nene drains the parish eastwards running to the North Sea through The Wash. Water Newton is sited at just 10 metres above the sea, it sits in the valley and local heights rise to busy 40 metres in gently rolling countryside. Water Newton parish was small, even by the standards of its county, it covered around 800 acres and would have supported a population of just under 100 parishioners. In Domesday times Water Newton was held Thorney Abbey and could offer 7 ploughs, small meadows and 2 mills. |
