The ParishThe parish of North Cray lies in northwestern Kent on the edges of the urban area of Greater London. North Cray is located about 2 miles south of the former market town & now suburb of Bexley. North Cray sits in a straggle along the eastern banks of the River Cray and is cut by the modern dual-carriageway road of the A223 which connects the many settlements on the southeastern fringes of the metropolitan area. At the time of this transcript North Cray would have been a small and very rural settlement devoted to farming, today it has almost become engulfed within the suburban area and is rapidly developing connectivity with the rest of the ever-expanding suburbs. The River Cray drains the parish to the northeast reaching the Thames estuary shortly after joining the Darenth north of Dartford. North Cray is sited at just 20 metres above the sea but as it sits within the valley of the Cray land rises nearby to over 80 metres in gentle undulations. North Cray parish was of a size typical of the smaller Kent parishes, it covered just over 1,400 acres and would have supported a population of around 350 parishioners. In Domesday times North Cray was a very small place indeed, it was held by Bishop Odo of Bayeux and could offer just a pair of ploughs with small meadows and pastures. |
