The ParishThe parish of Upper Hardres lies in the central part of eastern Kent about 5 miles south of the city of Canterbury. Upper Hardres is located in a maze of lanes just east of the B2068 road (the ancient Roman Road of Stane Street) which kinks Canterbury to the port of Hythe. Upper Hardres has only a small centre, clustered around its church and the main village crossroads, otherwise it is a scatter of farms and cottages. The soil is a heavy loam and consequently agriculture was difficult, much of the area was set to woodland, there being a ready market for oak in particular. The parish also contained small hop gardens. Upper Hardres is sited at almost 140 metres above sea level on a ridge of high ground along which the Roman's took their major routeway, there is little surface drainage as the chalk is porous but what there is is headed northwards to join the Nail Bourne, a tributary of the Little Stour and eventually reach the North Sea through Sandwich. At just over 2,000 acres Upper Hardres parish was of a typical size for a southern parish and it supported almost 350 parishioners. In Domesday Book Upper Hardres was enumerated jointly with its northern neighbour (Lower Hardres) and the pair were held by Bishop Odo of Bayeux. The joint area supported 6 ploughs as well as holding extensive woodland and many swine renders. |
