The ParishThe parish of Orpington lies in northwestern Kent, it would once have been a country parish but has now been engulfed by the spread of Greater London and is now a suburb of the capital and currently marks the edge of the sprawl with fields to the east. Orpington village originally grew up around the junction of the A224 London to Sevenoaks road with the A208 which branched off heading towards Greenwich. The village has spread much to the south, particularly with the coming of the railway which followed a route about a mile to the south of the original centre. Orpington parish was quite large, around 3,500 acres, and supported a population of around 900 parishioners during the period of this transcript; it has, of course grown spectacularly since then. The parish sat at about 50 metres above sea level in the valley of the River Cray which headed northwards to the Thames near Erith. Orpington has a long history and merits two mentions in Domesday Book where it supported no fewer than 3 mills and 25 ploughs - it must have been a very different place in those times. |
