The ParishThe parish of Rodmersham is located in northern Kent quite close to the Swale Estuary & its junction with that of the Thames. Rodmersham is rather a dispersed settlement located about 1 mile southeast of the market town of Sittingbourne. Rodmersham lies, in lanes, about a mile south of the A2 (London to Dover road) on a lane that heads for its modern successor, the M2 motorway. The main settlement is at Rodmersham Green to the south of the parish but elsewhere there are scattered farms and cottages across a wide area. Rodmersham sits on the rather flat north Kent coastal plain to the north of the North Downs chalk ridge, the area is a mixture of arable agriculture together with market gardening and orchards. The estuary of the River Swale lies about 3 miles north of Rodmersham and small brooks and field drains head towards Conyer Creek to join it. Rodmersham is sited at around 40 metres above the sea and the land around is largely flat or gently undulating. The coastal plain is an area of tightly packed small parishes and Rodmersham fits that pattern, at just over 1,200 acres it would have supported just over 300 parishioners. There is no specific mention of Rodmersham in Domesday Book. |
