The ParishThe parish of Shoreham lies in western Kent not too far from its border with neighbouring Surrey. Shoreham is located about 4 miles north of the market town of Sevenoaks. Shoreham is a mid-sized and compact village sitting mainly on the western banks of the River Darent and sited about a half mile west of the A225 road which connects Sevenoaks to Dartford, the modern M25 (London Orbital Motorway) also runs through the western part of the parish as well the Sevenoaks to London rail line. At the time of this transcript Shoreham would have earned its living largely from agriculture, a mixed farming regime together with some market gardening would have provided the main economy. The Darent drains the parish northwards to reach the Thames Estuary and thence the North Sea. Shoreham is sited at around 60 metres above the sea but sits in a gap in the North Downs created by the darent, land rises to both east and west to local heights in excess of 150 metres. By Kent standards Shoreham parish was noticeably large, it covered just over 5,500 acres and would have supported a population of just over 1,000 parishioners. There is no specific mention of Shoreham in Domesday Book. |
