The ParishThe parish of Sutton (the suffix "by Dover" to distinguish it from others of this name) is located in the extreme southeast of Kent close to its English Channel coast. As the suffix suggests the parish is located near the Cross-Channel port of Dover, this lies about 5 miles south of Sutton. Sutton is a fairly compact small village sited in lanes to the east of the A256 road which links Dover with Sandwich. Most of Sutton's settlement lies around a "T" junction of two lanes, one headed southwest to northeast and the other headed northwest off that lane. Both lanes are narrow and lined with cottages and farms. The village is built on reasonably high ground on a chalky substrate, despite being less than 3 miles from the sea the village is sited at around 40 metres above sea level on rolling downland that rises a further 20 metres higher to the northwest. Sutton itself is built in a "dry" valley with no obvious surface drainage beyond field ditches, what water falls is headed northeast to reach the sea at Sandwich. The parish was rather small in extent, just over 1,000 acres and supported barely 150 parishioners. The parish does not merit a separate entry within Domesday Book. |
