The ParishThe parish of East Sutton lies in central Kent, it is located about 6 miles southeast of the town of Maidstone. East Sutton sits, in lanes, about 2 miles east of the A274 road which connects Maidstone with Tenterden. There is not much to East Sutton, no distinct village as such, merely a collection of scattered farms and cottages across a rolling rural landscape. East Sutton sits on a low ridge overlooking The Weald and the parish covers a portion of both the Greensand ridge and the Wealden clays too. The economy would have been largely agricultural with orchards, hop gardens and a mixture of both pastoral & arable farming. A small tributary of the River Beult drains the parish southwards and then joins the Medway before reversing direction and reaching the Thames Estuary. East Sutton is sited at around 110 metres above the sea, local heights of 160 are reached on the ridge whilst the Weald is closer to 40 metres and only a mile to the south. By the standards of this part of Kent east Sutton was a relatively small parish, it covered just under 1,600 acres and supported a population of just under 400 parishioners. In Domesday times East Sutton was held by one Bishop Odo of Bayeux and could offer just 6 ploughs as well as small meadows and woods. |

Standard preprinted and self-numbered Marriage register with 4 entries per page | Grade 4 Register - there are notable quality issues with this register which may have resulted in many misreads | The register from 1780 onwards has faded badly to the point of invisibility in places making for a very challenging read and some guessing, errors due to misreading are likely to be frequent. |
2 | 27th March 1814 - 5th February 1837 | Kent History & Library Centre - Maidstone - Reference - P360B/1/D/2 | Standard Rose style preprinted and prenumbered Marriage register | Grade 3 Register - there are sufficient quality issues with this register to indicate that some misreads will occur albeit few in number | The register begins as poorly as that above but soon improves, there is a consequence of a few misreads |
