Blackrod St Katherine

The Parish

Blackrod is a chapelry of the large Lancashire parish of Bolton. Strangely it is a detached portion of that parish. Blackrod is situated about 7 miles west of Bolton close by the busy M61 motorway which links Manchester to Preston. Blackrod is a large strip village along the B5408, formerly the A6, which runs parallel to the motorway. The village sits at the eastern edge of the Lancashire plain where the foothills of the Pennines begin to rise. At 158 metres above sea level Blackrod is not high but hills rise to the northeast behind neighbouring Horwich to well over 400 metres.

The Church

St Katherine's church is sited at the northern end of Blackrod adjacent to the main road which runs through the village. Pevsner dismisses the church in just a few lines as "large and conventional". The church is a modern 20th century build immediately pre the 1st World War. However, there is evidence remaining in the base of the tower of a preexisting building from the Perpendicular period. Enclosed by a low wall and with a neat trimmed graveyard the church sits in a rather open position but buildings are all around.
