The ParishThe parish of Hoole lies in the extreme west of Lancashire, indeed it forms part of Lancashire's Irish Sea coast bordering the estuary of the River Asland. Hoole is a much enlarged settlement, previously two settlements of Much Hoole and Little Hoole, situated on the A59 road about 8 miles southwest of the town of Preston, the A59 connects Preston with Liverpool. The area is rather low lying and as largely used for pastoral farming on the rich pastures formed by the joint estuaries of Asland and the nearby Ribble. Most of the population would have been engaged in cattle & sheep rearing, nowadays Much Hoole has grown as a commuter village for the nearby industrial centres, in particular Preston. The River Asland and many associated streams and man-made watercourses drain the parish to the north whence it merges with the greater Ribble estuary. Hoole is sited at just 10 metres above the sea and much about is of a similar height, part of an extensive coastal plain. The parish of Hoole, unusually for Lancashire was a united single parish and not divided into chapelries, it was of a typical size for coastal Lancashire and covered almost 3,000 acres, the parish supported a population of around 1,000 parishioners. There is no specific mention of Hoole in Domesday Book. |
