The ParishThe parish of Melling (given the qualifier "by Skelmersdale" to distinguish it from Lancashire's other Melling in Bowland) lies in southwestern Lancashire about 8 miles north of the city of Liverpool. Melling was a chapelry within the wider parish of Halsall but was licensed for marriages throughout the transcript period. Melling is a small village sitting on the very fringes of the growing conurbation of Merseyside, it lies just over a mile east of the A59 road which connects Liverpool with Preston. A narrow green corridor separates it from the vast urban landscape of Merseyside. At the time of this transcript Melling would have been a purely rural and agricultural community. Modern developments have come en-masse to the parish, the Leeds-Liverpool Canal passed through and was superseded by the Liverpool to Preston railway and today's modern M67 motorway also passes through the area. The drainage hereabouts has been much modified by man over the centuries to drain more land, a series of man-made channels drains westwards forming the River Alt which reaches the Irish Sea just south of Formby. The area of the chapelry was comparable with that of many parishes, covering just under 2,000 acres it would have supported a population of close to 600 parishioners. Melling is sited at around 30 metres above the sea in rather flat terrain where local heights doe not much exceed that height for some distance. In Domesday times Melling was recorded as a property held by Roger of Poitou but its assets were not detailed. |
