The ParishThe parish of Pennington lies in "Lancashire over the Water" in the Furness Peninsula in what was transferred to Cumbria in Local Government reorganisation in the 20th century. Pennington is located roughly 2 miles southwest of the market town of Ulverston and sits a half mile northwest of the A580 road which links Ulverston with Barrow in Furness. Pennington is a rather loosely constructed parish, Pennington itself being merely a scatter of farms and cottages whilst the main settlements are of Swarthmoor on the A580 and largely modern and Loppergarth with the parish's main inn and a centre of sorts. Pennington occupies a shelf of land at the point where the coastal plain gives way to substantial hills. That location gave its pastoral farmers access to both richer pastures on the lower land for cattle whilst hardy Herdwick sheep grazed the upper levels. Across the parish there are mine-shafts remaining from the workings of the extractive industries with lead a frequent target along with other metalliferous ores. Modern developments have come to the parish with the arrival of the railway line connecting Barrow in Furness to the West Coast Main Line at Carnforth passing through the parish without granting a station. Pennington is drained eastwards by the Levy Beck which makes its way through southern Ulverston to the sea at Morecambe Bay. Pennington is sited at around 80 metres above the sea but land rises to the local hills of Copse Hill and Castle Hill at 205 and 234 metres respectively both sitting within a mile of the church, a little further northwest rises Bank House Moor towering at 311 metres. Pennington parish was small compared with its Furness neighbours but still covered around 2,700 acres and supported a population of close to 400 parishioners. Whilst Pennington is mentioned in Domesday Book as a holding of King William like so much of the north it had no population and was described as "waste". |
