The ParishThe parish of Great Dalby lies in eastern Leicestershire no too far from its border with neighbouring Rutland. Great Dalby is located roughly 3 miles south of the market town of Melton Mowbray and sits on the B6047 road which connects Melton Mowbray through to Market Harborough. The B6047 zigzags through the village performing a series of right-angled bends with most of the village properties lying along the "U" shape that is produced, the "U" lying in its side. Like many parishes in this area of Leicestershire the farming has changed markedly across the years, at the time of this transcript it would have been largely pastoral but with modern machinery it has turned noticeably more arable albeit retaining the hedging typical of "hunting country". Modern developments did come to Great Dalby, a branch railway line connecting Melton Mowbray through to Leicester ran past but has nowadays been closed and dismantled. Great Dalby is drained northwards by a small tributary of the nearby River Eye, the latter becoming the Wreake westwards before joining, in turn, the Soar and finally Trent for a long journey to the North Sea reached through the Humber Estuary. Great Dalby is sited at around 110 metres above the sea and sits just north of the ironstone escarpment of Burrough Hill (topped by a hill fort) which tops out at 206 metres roughly 2 miles to the southeast. Great Dalby parish was fairly typically sized for its area, covering roughly 2,400 acres it would have supported a population of just over 450 parishioners. In Domesday times Great Dalby was an equally unremarkable place, shared three ways with the majority holding with the Bishop of Lincoln, its assets totalled 11 ploughs and some meadows. |
