The ParishThe parish of Houghton on the Hill lies in the eastern portion of central Leicestershire roughly 6 miles east of the county town of Leicester. Houghton on the Hill sits on and mostly south of the A47 road which connects Leicester with Peterborough. The village has a roughly triangular shape, the main road forming its broad northern axis for a half mile whilst the apex extends south from the A47 for a similar distance. Houghton on the Hill, at the time of this transcript would have been a typical farming community with pastoral methods dominant but arable present in smaller quantities too. The village's close presence to Leicester has enlarged what would have been a relatively small village with modern developments. Modern devlopements in the form of the railway line from Leicester to Melton Mowbray have come and gone, this route disappearing in favour of a more northern approach. Houghton on the Hill sits in the headwaters of the River Sence which drains the parish south and then west to meet the Soar to the southwest of Leicester, here water turns back north headed to the Trent and that river's long journey to the North Sea arriving through the Humber Estuary. Houghton on the Hill is sited on a rising site between 150 metres, at its southern apex, and 170 metres at the A47, some of the highest ground for some distance and only exceeded by the 226 metres on Life Hill some distance to the east. Covering some 1,800 acres Houghton on the Hill parish was atypical eastern Leicestershire parish supporting a population of around 450 parishioners. In Domesday times Houghton on the Hill was a much smaller place, held by Henry de Ferrers its assets of just 4 ploughs and a small meadow indicated a very small rural holding. |

St
Catherine's church sits almost at the southern end of the village
accessed along Main Street and sitting on its eastern side just
before it clears the built area. The church is an unusual one in
that it appears to have been largely built in a single phase, in
local iron-stone, during the first half of the 14th century, the
Decorated era. A single re-used window of the 13th century
indicates the start of build but the main fabric of nave, chancel
and western tower, complete with chamfered broach-spire appears
entirely to be Decorated. The arcades appear to be the only
significant addition made in medieval times as these are
Perpendicular and perhaps of the later 15th century, curiously the
sedilia which occupies the northern side of the aisle is certainly
of c 1350 in contrast. Pevsner mentions 3 distinct phases of
Victorian restoration tackling the chancel in 1857, the nave &
aisles in 1869 and finally adding the large northern porch in
1874. Parking immediately outside the churchyard is not permitted,
to the north is best as there is the main entrance through a pair
of wooden gates. The western end of the church is markedly impeded
by close trees but all other angles are available for the
photographer. |
