The ParishThe parish of Mountsorrel lies in the northern portion of central Leicestershire. Mountsorrel, a former market town, sits adjacent to the busy A6 road which links Leicester with Derby & Manchester about 7 miles north of Leicester itself. Mountsorrel has grown from its village site into a popular commuter village for the nearby city. In the past the main employers were, apart from agriculture, quarrying of the local granite & framework knitting which employed a substantial proportion of the local inhabitants. Mountsorrel sits in Charnwood Forest, an area of unusual geology producing an island of higher ground within the relative lowlands of Leicestershire. Mountsorrel's market had fallen into disuse by the time of much of this transcript but fortunes were improved by the improvement to the main road (today's A6 bypasses to the east) and the arrival of the Grand Union Canal & Great Central Railway which helped industrialisation of the area. The parish drains into the River Soar, which is headed northwards to join the River Trent south of Long Eaton and thence to the North Sea through the Humber Estuary. Mountsorrel is sited on a granite promontory at 50 metres above sea level, 10 metres above the river, but land rises into Charnwood Forest to the west almost to 250 metres on Beacon Hill. Mountsorrel parish was created as a chapelry from the larger parish of Rothley, it covers a small area of less than 1,000 acres (small for Leicestershire) but supported over 1,500 parishioners. Mountsorrel is not specifically mentioned in Domesday Book. |
