The ParishThe parish of Shearsby lies in southern Leicestershire close to the border with neighbouring Northamptonshire. Shearsby was formerly a chapelry in the parish of Knaptoft but was registered for marriages separately. The compact village is sited about 8 miles south of the city of Leicester just west of the A6199 road which links Leicester to Northampton. Shearsby is sited along a looping lane which heads westwards then south from the A6199, it is compact but not a large village. The landuse is a mixture of arable and pastoral fields, mostly small and well-hedged. The village sits at about 120 metres above sea level amidst a rolling landscape - typical hunting country. The drainage is headed mostly northwestward to join the River Sence, a tributary of the Soar. The parish is not a large acreage but supported just under 400 parishioners. In Domesday times the land was held three ways with the majority held by one Norman of Hallaton it supported only 5 ploughs and had some meadow. |
