The ParishThe parish of Stonton Wyville lies in southeastern Leicestershire not too far from its border with neighbouring Northamptonshire. Stonton Wyville is located about 5 miles north of Market Harborough and sits about 2 miles east of the B6047 that connects Market Harborough with Melton Mowbray. There is very little to Stonton Wyville, just a small grouping of farms and cottages on a dead-end road huddled around the church. Stonton Wyville's economy would have been almost totally based on farming with a mixed regime in place. Stonton Wyville is drained by the headwaters of the River Welland which heads off eastwards through Stamford & Spalding to reach the North Sea through The Wash. Stonton Wyville is sited at around 80 metres above the sea in classic hunting countryside, rolling and populated with hedges, local heights, whilst not extreme, rise to around 150 metres within a couple of miles. Stonton Wyville parish was fairly typically sized for this part of the county, it covered just over 1,200 acres and would have supported around 100 parishioners. In Domesday times Stonton Wyville was shared between Hugh de Grandmesnil with a small holding with Countess Judith, collectively the parish offered 6 ploughs, the usual meadows pastures and woodland but at that time held two mills. |
