The ParishThe parish of Wistow lies in central southern Leicestershire about 7 miles southeast of its capital of Leicester. Wistow is located in lanes about a mile south of the A6 road which links Leicester onwards to London. Wistow is, and has always been, a relatively small place; it consists of the hall and associated farms and cottages all straggling along the lane which links Countesthorpe with Kibworth Beauchamp. The area was dominated by a pastoral regime with small grassy fields between high hedge predominating. Growth came to the area with the building of the Leicester Union canal which passes through the parish and offered opportunities for commerce in what was otherwise a very rural area. The canal makes use of a very low interfuvial to pass between the upper reaches of the River Sence (which flows westwards to join the Soar and thence the Trent) and the headwaters of the River Welland which flows eastwards to the Wash. Wistow is sited at around 90 metres above sea level. Wistow parish was small and quite typical of other parishes in this portion of rural Leicestershire. In Domesday times Wistow was held by one Robert the Bursar and boasted a mere 6 ploughs, a mill and some meadow. |
