The ParishThe parish of Binbrook St Mary is located in northeastern Lincolnshire not too far from its North Sea coast. Binbrook formerly consisted of two parishes, St Mary was the southern of the two, both are now united as St Mary & St Gabriel. Binbrook is a large compact village, it used to be a small market town, but lost that status, roughly midway (about 8 miles from each) between Market Rasen & Louth, northeast of the former, northwest of the latter. Binbrook sits astride the B1203 road which links Market Rasen with Grimsby. Binbrook is located in the Lincolnshire Wolds in an area that saw mixed farming of both sheep and also large warrenries. The rabbits not only supplied meat but also supported a significant fur industry in Binbrook. Binbrook sits in rolling chalk country on a small tributary of the River Bain, this heads north and then east to reach the North Sea through Tetney. Binbrook is sited at about 70 metres above sea level, although land around rises a further 50 metres to the tops of the local hills. The area has become increasingly arable in modern times as machinery and fertiliser helped to make the poor chalk soils workable and productive. Binbrook St Mary was the smaller of the two parishes, it is difficult to work out the population split, as it is invariably quoted together with St Gabriel, but probably supported around 500 parishioners. In Domesday times Binbrook in the larger sense was held jointly by three tenants, the majority holder was one Robert of Trosny, smaller portions were held by Guy of Craon and Osbern the priest. The parish jointly with St Gabriel boasted 20 ploughs as well as meadows and at least two mills. |
