The ParishThe parish of Caythorpe lies in southwestern Lincolnshire quite close to its border with neighbouring Nottinghamshire. Caythorpe is located roughly midway between the market town of Sleaford and the Nottinghamshire market town of Newark on Trent being roughly 7 miles west of the former and 8 miles southeast of the latter. Caythorpe is a large village built on and west of the A607 road which links the city of Lincoln with Grantham. Caythorpe has a distinctly planned look to its street pattern which forms an elongated "H" pattern just west of the main road. Caythorpe sits midway down the scarp slope of the Jurassic limestone belt and sits on a shelf of land overlooking the plains to its west. The limestone was a dominant feature of the economy being an attractive building stone, arable agriculture was the next major economic activity in the area. A number of small streams drain the parish westwards into the River Brant which heads northwards to join the Witham and reach the North Sea through the port of Boston. Caythorpe is sited at around 70 metres above the sea, the plains to its west being some 50 metres lower, whilst to the east the second portion of scarp rises to over 100 metres on Caythorpe Heath. Caythorpe parish is elongated east to west, as are many along the scarp, the purpose being to share varying land-uses between the parishes, it was larger than many parishes in the area and covered just over 4,200 acres. The parish would have supported a population of some 800 parishioners. In Domesday times Caythorpe was held by one Robert of Vessey and was a wealthy place indeed offering an incredibly high 53 ploughs as meadows and a half share in a mill. |
