Claypole St Peter

The Parish

The parish of Claypole lies in the extreme west of Lincolnshire forming a stretch of the border with neighbouring Nottinghamshire, it is also not too far from neighbouring Leicestershire being close to where the three counties meet. Claypole is located roughly 5 miles southeast of the Nottinghamshire town of Newark on Trent and sits a little over two miles east of the Great North Road, the A1 which runs from London to Edinburgh. Claypole is a clarge and compact village sitting on the eastern banks of the River Witham, a position which would have given its farming some diversity away from the usual arable regime, the water-meadows providing pastures mainly for cattle to compliment the cereal cropping of the majority of the parish acreage. Modern developments have come to Claypole, the main East Coast railway line, also from London to Edinburgh, skirts the village to its east but does not grant a station. The Witham drains the parish northwards, eventually passing through Lincoln before turning east to meet the North Sea through the port of Boston. Claypole is sited at around 20 metres above the sea in the broad plain of the Jurassic clay beds underlying the area, land is rarely more than 40 metres above the sea for some considerable distance. Claypole parish was toward the larger scale for the notoriously small Lincolnshire parishes, covering close to 2.800 acres it would have supported a population of around 650 parishioners. In Domesday tmes Claypole was a typical rural holding, shared between Geofffrey Alselin & Bishop Odo it could muster 12 ploughs, some meadows and also had a mill.

The Church

St Peter's church sits at the western edge of the village on the northern side of the main lane leading to Balderton & Newark, Main Street. The graceful spire standing tall above a thin tower makes the church stand out from many in the area and led Pevsner to describe it as "a proud church". The fabric has its origins in the late 13th century, a time when Early English Gothic was at its height of popularity. The basal sections of the tower together with the transepts best illustrate this style, the southern transept has an interesting history having been originally built as a detached "Lady Chapel" before being reused by conversion and connection to the main body. The build of that main body extended into the first half of the 14th century when styles evolved into the Decorated period which is shown by most of both nave & chancel. Despite this completion further work followed in the late 14th century and in the Perpendicular style, these works were designed to heighten the church by adding further stages to the tower, by raising the main body's roof-line and to add a clerestory to improve internal lighting. All of this medieval work over a period of a century and a half has not been significantly altered, for once, by a Victorian intervention as Pevsner does not indicate there was such a frequent event. Parking for the church is made easy by a triangular area outside the gates leading into a churchyard which is largely devoid of obstacles for the photographer.
