The ParishThe parish of Fulletby lies almost centrally within Lincolnshire. Fulletby is located roughly 3 miles northeast of the market town of Horncastle and sits about 2 miles east of the A153 road which links Horncastle with Louth. Fulletby is a small and compact hilltop village sitting abreast the Lincolnshire Wolds. A broad lane heads east from the A153 and at the village splits into a complex set of narrow lanes forming a squared-off figure eight with most properties around these lanes. Like many Lincolnshire communities the local economy is underpinned by farming, the elevation of the Wolds did, however, introduce some variation from the normal cereal growing with sheep grazing too. There was some quarrying of the local green sandstone too mostly for local building work and notably used in the church. Fulletby is drained west and then south by the infant River Waring which meets the Bain at Horncastle, after joining the Witham water meets the North Sea through the port of Boston. Fulletby is sited on a ridge at around 130 metres above the sea , something of a high point for some distance around. Fulletby parish was typically sized for the Wolds at around 1,800 acres it would have supported a population of close to 250 parishioners. In Domesday times Fulletby was shared, almost equally, between the Bishop of Durham & Earl Hugh of Chester; their combined holdings totalled just 7 ploughs and some meadows making Fulletby a modest place at that time. |
