The ParishThe parish of Gayton le Marsh lies in eastern Lincolnshire not too far from its North Sea coastline. Gayton le Marsh is located roughly 7 miles southeast of the market town of Louth and sits just over a mile northeast of the A157 road which links with Maltby le Marsh. Gayton le Marsh is a long straggle of a village with no real centre, properties are dotted along a minor and dead-ended lane northeastwards from the A157 starting around a mile northeast and running loosely for almost a mile and a half in the same direction. This area of the county is much altered by drainage attempts being at or close to sea level, the rich soils that resulted are either used for high margin vegetables or, if somewhat wetter, for cattle pasture. Gayton le Marsh is drained by a plethora of man-made channels, notably the Great Eau, all heading towards the nearby North Sea which is reached at Saltfleet Haven. Gayton le Marsh is sited at around 5 metres above the sea, land is flat or slightly inclined hereabouts, the A157 reaches 12 metres, it is not until the edges of the Lincolnshire Wolds are reached over 4 miles southwest that height is significantly gained. Gayton le Marsh parish was fairly typically sized for a parish with much reclaimed land, at almost 2,200 acres it would have supported a population of around 300 parishioners. Gayton le Marsh is not specifically mentioned in Domesday Book. |
