Kingerby St Peter

The Parish

The parish of Kingerby lies in north central Lincolnshire about 5 miles northwest of the small market town of Market Rasen. Kingerby is a tiny place today, little more than a hamlet grouped around a moated farmhouse. Kingerby sits on a narrow lane a mile north of the A1103 road, a mere short cut, itself, between the Gainsborough to Market Rasen road and that leading north from the latter towards Caistor. The area is lowland and would have been predominantly pastoral at the time of this transcript, today there is much more arable present. Kingerby is drained westwards by the Kingerby Beck which soon joins the much interfered with course of the Ancholme which heads arrow-straight to the Humber Estuary reaching it just west of Barton upon Humber. Kingerby is sited at around 20 metres above the sea and land is at this level for many miles around it. Lincolnshire parishes are quite small but Kingerby was still one of the smaller, it covered just under 1,500 acres and would have held a population of around 100 parishioners. In Domesday times Kingerby was clearly slightly more significant, shared between Bishop Odo of Bayeux and the Bishop of Lincoln the parish could offer 8 ploughs, a large meadow and a mill.

The Church

St Peter's church sits on the northern side of the lane and opposite the above-mentioned moated farmhouse. The church has very early origins, Pevsner notes features that are Norman or even Saxo-Norman but they are mere fragments. The roof line of an 11th(?) century nave is preserved. The majority of dateable features are Early English Gothic in style and thus 13th century, the tower and chancel being notable in this respect. Various windows show the Decorated style as the building was refreshed whilst it was re-roofed during both the Jacobite (nave) and Victorian (chancel) periods. The church was declared redundant in 1981 and is now maintained by the Redundant Churches Fund. The church is screened by a tall and neatly clipped hedge, a metal gate granting access. The churchyard is quite small but adequate angles are present for photography.
