The Parish

The parish of Kirkby Green lies in the southern part of Central Lincolnshire. Kirkby Green is roughly 7 miles north of the market town of Sleaford sited on the B1191 road which connects the A15 through Scopwick to Timberland. Kirkby Green is a small parish often united with Scopwick its larger western neighbour. There is not much of a village to Kirkby Green just a collection of cottages mostly sited around a major bend in the B1191 and along a lane which runs off to the south. The parish is one of many in Lincolnshire which formed where the higher ground of the Wolds runs down to the coastal plain, Kirkby Green is built at just over 10 metres above sea-level and parts of the parish are half that height. This area is mixture of arable, on dryer ground, and pasture although recent years have seen an increasingly arable trend. The parish is relatively small in extent and supported fewer than 100 parishioners. The parish is only mentioned in Domesday Book in conjunction with Scopwick where both were held by the magnificently named Drogo de la Beuvriere.

The Church

Holy Cross church is sited just to the south of the B1191 and to the east of the southward leading lane. The church was entirely rebuilt in 1848 and consists of a combined nave and chancel with a bellcote all accessed through a western porch. The building is rather dismissed by Pevsner in just a few lines pausing only to comment of the east wall and piscina which are retained from the original building and were 13th century. The site is extremely shielded from the lane by mature trees and a medium height wall, however access is through a wooden gate at the north of the site. The graveyard follows a modern trend and is left to mature for the sake of wildlife often displaying an expanse of wild flowers as a result.
