The ParishThe parish of South Kyme lies in south central Lincolnshire about 6 miles northeast of the market town of Sleaford. South Kyme is located just over two miles south of the A153 road which connects Sleaford with Tattershall & Horncastle. South Kyme is built on both sides of the man-made Kyme Eau in a rather Dutch configuration with most properties standing on the raised levee to either side and with lower land beyond. The countryside hereabouts is heavily influenced by the hands of man, extensive drainage being created to produce rich and fertile arable farmland from what was once the western edges of The Fens. South Kyme has a long history, the priory, the remains of which forms the parish church, was founded by the Augustinians before documentary evidence of its existence in 1169, it was, as was usual, dissolved by Henry VIII. The Kyme Eau drains northeastwards the sort distance to the River Witham whence water turns southeastwards to reach the North Sea through the port of Boston. South Kyme is sited at just 2 metres above the sea but land rises imperceptibly to the southwest towards Sleaford to reach just above 20 metres. Largely augmented from reclaimed land South Kyme parish was one of the larger in the county, covering almost 8,400 acres it would have supported a population of just over 900 parishioners. In Domesday times South Kyme was almost equally shared between the King and Gilbert de Ghent, a modest place of just 5 ploughs, the usual meadows & woodland but was over-endowed with fisheries, 9 fisheries reflecting the principal landuse prior to drainage schemes. |
