The ParishThe parish of Market Stainton lies in the eastern part of north central Lincolnshire about 5 miles north of the market town of Horncastle. Market Stainton, as its name suggests, formerly held a weekly market but this has long since ceased as the village failed to grow into the town that was intended. Market Stainton is a compact small village lying about a half mile east of the B1225 road which links Horncastle with Caistor. Market Stainton sits in the more rolling portion of Lincolnshire, The Lincolnshire Wolds. The landscape is still, however, totally dominated by arable farming although sheep rearing would once have been the mainstay. Market Stainton lies on the western slopes of the valley of the River Bain, this drains the area to the south where it eventually passes through Boston into The Wash. Market Stainton is sited at around 90 metres above sea level and sits on a low ridge which is followed by the B road. Market stainton parish was of a typical size for this part of Lincolnshire, at 1,100 acres it would have supported around 180 parishioners. In Domesday times the land was held by one Ranulf of St Valery and boasted 5 ploughs some meadow and 2 mills. |
