The ParishThe parish of Scartho lies in the extreme northeast of Lincolnshire not too far from its North Sea coast. Scartho, formerly a small village, lies about 2 miles south of the port of Grimsby and, indeed, has largely become a suburb of that port as it has grown during the 20th century. Scartho sits on the A1243 road which heads southwards from Grimsby to join the A16 heading for Louth. There was previously not much to Scartho, most of the properties there now having been built in the last 50 years or so. At the time of this transcript Scartho was a small agricultural settlement. Scartho is drained eastwards by feeders of the Buck Beck which reaches the nearby North Sea just south of the seaside resort of Cleethorpes. Scartho is sited at just 15 metres above the sea and sits on a largely flat plain at or more or less at that height. Lincolnshire parishes are traditionally small and Scartho was no exception, it covered just under 1,400 acres and supported a population of just under 200 parishioners. In Domesday times Scartho was held by Bishop Odo of Bayeux and could boast 16 ploughs, substantial meadows & woodlands and 2 mills. |
