The ParishThe parish of Scotton lies in northwestern Lincolnshire about 6 miles northeast of the market town of Gainsborough and just southeast of the A159 road which links Gainsborough to Scunthorpe. In common with most Lincolnshire parishes Scotton is quite low lying, being merely 20 metres above sea level, in the shallow valley of the River Eau (a tributary of the River Trent). Scotton was a relatively populous rural parish with a population of just under 500 inhabitants. The area is intensely agricultural and dominated by arable fields of cereal and oil seed. Scotton is obviously an ancient settlement as it receives detailed listings of the various landowners in the Domesday Book |
