The ParishThe parish of Willoughton lies in northwestern Lincolnshire, not too far from its border with neighbouring Nottinghamshire. Willoughton lies about 8 miles northeast of the market town of Gainsborough. Willoughton is located just west of the B1398 road which links Kirton in Lindsey with the city of Lincoln. Willoughton is one of a string of villages that lie at the foot of the preeminent west facing scarp slope of the Lincolnshire Wolds. These settlement have traditionally grown at or close to the springline at the foot of these limestone hills and are shaped (as is Willoughton parish) to incorporate both lowland plain and upland into the parish. The B1398 road follows the scarp line of the Wolds and a lane plunges down to Willoughton at its base before running out westwards across the plains to the River Trent. Willoughton is a compact village with virtually all property clustered close by to the main crossroads. Willoughton is sited at about 30 metres above sea level, the scarp immediately to its east rises a further 30 metres or more, what drainage there is is headed north to join the River Eau and ultimately the Trent and the North Sea through the Humber Estuary. Willoughton parish is of a common size with most of the parishes, hereabouts, and supported almost 600 parishioners. Almost all would have been engaged in arable agriculture or ancillary pursuits and today this is totally arable in nature with large open fields and big skies. In Domesday times the lands were held by a pair of characters, Waldin the artificier & Odo the bowman, and supported 9 ploughs as well as extensive meadows. |
