The Parish

The parish of St Christopher le Stocks lay almost centrally within the City of London covering an area of a few hundred yards centred along Threadneedle Street on which the church one stood. The church stood alongside the Bank of England for which the City is renowned, it was to be its downfall, however. Like most of the city it was largely destroyed during the Great Fire of London. After the fire the church was one of the first to be rebuilt by Wren. The area today is one where commercial premises dominate and night time residents are few, St Christopher parish was, even then, one of the lightest populated parishes with fewer than 100 parishioners. The parish sits barely 10 metres above the sea with most drainage taking place in buried channels taking water south to the nearby Thames.

The Church

The first mention of a church on this site dates back to 1282, the name "le Stocks" refers to the punishment stocks which occupied a market place on the site next to Mansion House. The original church would have been probably Early English Gothic in style but, like most of the parish properties, it was destroyed by the Great Fire of London in 1666. Following the fire St Christopher was chosen to be one of the first rebuilt by the Wren team and was completed in 1671. Sadly for the church its tall tower became its undoing as, following the move of the Bank of England to next door in 1734 and riots in 1780, it was feared the tall tower could be used to attack the Bank. That and commercial pressure to expand the Bank lead to the church's demolition in 1781 whence it was merged with St Margaret Lothbury.
