St Thomas the Apostle

The Parish

The parish of St Thomas the Apostle was almost centrally within the ancient walls of the city of London situated no more than a few metres from the Mansion House and immediately north of the city's Southwark Bridge. At the time of this transcript the area was still moderately inhabited with residents but today it is in the heart of the city's commercial area with few night-time inhabitants, the area being dominated by office blocks and the services that meet their needs. Whilst the church is no more it is remembered in the street of Great St Thomas Apostle, a narrow east to west running thoroughfare, little more than an alley, between the Mansion House & Cannon Street Station. The parish was largely destroyed by the ravages of the Great Fire of London its warren of tiny courtyards and properties a forgotten memory. This area of the city has largely sub-surface drainage and with the Thames only a few hundred metres south most water readily makes its way there. St Thomas the Apostle sat at just over 10 metres above the sea with land only gently rising a further 5 metres within a mile or so. Despite occupying a relative tiny area compared to rural parishes nevertheless at the time of this transcript around 500 parishioners would have crammed into its tiny acreage.

The Church

Sadly St Thomas' church was destroyed during the Great Fire of London and never rebuilt. One might therefore ask that if there were no physical building then where did these marriages actually take place, the answer being the mother church of St Mary Aldermary with which the parish was merged. The original church was founded in or about 1170 and documentary records show a major rebuilding of 1371, the church is, therefore, likely to have been a mixture of Norman Romanesque and Decorated styles. Following the fire a number of churches were chosen not to be rebuilt of which St Thomas was but one. The merged parish of St Mary Aldermary maintained separate register for the lost parish sporadically as can be seen by the gap of 17776 - 1812 in this series.
