Friern Barnet St James

The Parish

The parish of Friern Barnet lies in northeastern Middlesex forming a stretch of the border with neighbouring Hertfordshire, that border is rather convoluted hereabouts with a peninsula of Hertfordshire territory pushed deep into Middlesex and Friern Barnet borders the southern edge of that territory. Friern Barnet is located roughly 9 miles north of the City of London and sits a mile north of the A406 (North Circular Road) in a mass of modern suburbia. It is difficult to envisage the changes which have come to Friern Barnet, in the time of this transcript it was a small and distinct village strung out along Friern Barnet Lane, by 1931 the population had grown to over 23,000 as development swept outwards from the capital. Growth spurted with the construction of the East Coast main railway line through the parish from London to Edinburgh with suburban services stopping a Friern Barnet's station giving easy access to the capital for commuters. Prior to that this would have been an agricultural small village with much market gardening supporting the needs of the capital. Much of the drainage of the area has been taken sub-surface but Pymme's Brook does still exist and heads eastwards to join the Lea and then south to the Thames and the North Sea. Friern Barnet is sited at around 80 metres above the sea, the Thames' terraces rising steadily out of the capital to local heights of just 10 metres higher for quite a distance. Parish acreages within Middlesex are very variable in extent and Friern Barnet was one of the smaller within the less urban areas, it covered close to 1,300 acres and would have supported a population, at the start of this transcript period, of close to 400 parishioners. Friern Barnet is not specifically mentioned in Domesday Book.

The Church

St James' church stands on the western side of Friern Barnet Lane surrounded by mid-20th century housing. The church is something of a curiosity as there was a considerable enlargement of the church in the 1850s to accommodate the larger population. The original medieval church remains but forms just the southern aisle of what is today a Victorian church. The small 12th century church is swamped by its larger portion whence matching aisle, chancel and southwestern tower were added by the Victorians. Whilst Pevsner praises the mixture of local materials, grey flint & pebbly brown conglomerate, used for the new build it clearly does not sit easily with his architectural standards. The church is surrounded by a low picket fence with a short driveway to the south providing suitable parking. The churchyard has many trees making for a challenging building to adequately capture.
