The ParishThe parish of Christchurch lies in southern Monmouthshire, indeed it forms a stretch of the county's Bristol Channel coastline. Christchurch is located just over 2 miles east of the port town of Newport and sits a quarter mile north of the B4237 (formerly A48) road which connects Newport through to Chepstow. Christchurch, once a separate village, is nowadays almost an integral part of the wider conurbation of Newport with suburbs spreading across the intervening area, only the intrusive and modern development of the M4 motorway now separates Christchurch from becoming totally absorbed. At the time of this transcript Christchurch would have been a large village engaged largely in pastoral farming, some quarrying of the local limestone was taking place mainly for enriching the soils. Christchurch sits high on a ridge above the valley of the River Usk which drains the parish the short distance, through Newport, to the Bristol Channel. Christchurch is sited at 90 metres above both the sea and its river, the land continues to rise as a ridge northeastwards reaching 100 metres or so. By the standards of lowland Monmouthshire Christchurch was one of the larger in extent, covering just over 4,900 acres it would have supported a population of close to 1,300 parishioners. Despite it's proximity to places which are mentioned in Domesday Book, e.e. Caerleon across the Usk, Christchurch is not mentioned in Domesday Book. |

Standard preprinted and self-numbered Marriage register with 4 entries per page | Grade 4 Register - there are notable quality issues with this register which may have resulted in many misreads | Sadly the media available for this register has been filmed
with the left-hand folio slightly out-of-focus due to movement
during filming, as a result of the poor media there may be quite a
few misreads |
2 | 30th September 1798 - 1st March 1812 | Gwent Archives - Reference - D/PA/20.95 | Standard preprinted and self-numbered Marriage register with 3 entries per page | Grade 4 Register - there are notable quality issues with this register which may have resulted in many misreads | Unfortunately this register has suffered
considerable damage over the years having partially rotted from
its central spine leading to the insides of each folio being
missing. In most cases it is the day of the month which has been
lost but wherever possible these have been retrieved from extant
Bishop's Transcripts. There may well still be missing data and a
few misreads. |
