The ParishThe parish of Darowen lies in western Montgomeryshire close to its border with neighbouring Merioneth. Darowen lies about 6 miles east of the Merioneth market town of Machynlleth. Darowen is a small settlement lying about 2 miles south of the A470 road which connects Machynlleth with Caersws, the village is built on a pass between two hills where a narrow lane crosses over between two valleys. The parish is quite extensive as much of land around was once held in common and used for sheep rearing, with some cattle in the valley bottoms. The region is upland, Darowen is sited at 180 metres above sea level but the two hills to east and to west (Fron Goch topped by a hill-fort) rise to almost 300 metres above the sea. The countryside is steeply incised by valleys running east to west, the Nant Gwydol to the south being the larger. Both streams are tributaries of the River Dovey and head determinedly westwards to reach the Irish Sea at Aberdovey. The parish was extensive at around 9,000 (not untypical for an upland parish) and supported almost 1,000 parishioners in scattered hamlets as well as the main village. Like most of Wales Darowen is not mentioned in Domesday Book. |
