The ParishThe parish of Mochdre lies in the extreme south of Montgomeryshire forming part of the border with neighbouring Radnorshire. Mochdre is a rather dispersed upland parish with no real defined village, it sits about 3 miles southwest of the market town of Newtown. The hamlet of Mochdre, which gives the parish its name, lies around 2 miles south of the A489 road which connects Newtown with Caersws and onwards to Llanidloes. Mochdre is very much pastoral farming country in an upland region surrounded by high hills on three sides. Cattle would dominate in the valleys whilst sheep and wasteland dominated the upper regions of the parish. Some manufacture of flannel also occupied some of the residents. Fast flowing hill streams drain the short distance to the River Severn reaching it just west of newtown, the latter then heads on a long journey east then south to reach the sea through the Bristol Channel. The hamlet of Mochdre, in a deeply entrenched valley, is sited between 170 & 200 metres above the sea, land rises dramatically to local heights of over 500 metres on the hills to Mochdre's west, an extensive acreage of wind-farms taking advantage of these heights. Despite being an upland parish and extensive, Mochdre is one of Montgomeryshire's smallest by acreage, it covered just over 5,000 acres and would have supported a population scattered across its reaches of around 500 parishioners. Like most of Wales Mochdre is not recorded in Domesday Book which did not cover this area. |

Plain, unruled book, a continuation of the extant composite register in contravention of Hardwicke's segregation & wording requirements | Grade 4 Register - there are notable quality issues with this register which may have resulted in many misreads | Damage to this register is extensive and there is no segregation of marriages from other events. There is a risk of accidental omission and a likelihood of misreads |
