The ParishThe parish of Buxton lies in northeastern Norfolk about 4 miles southeast of the market town of Aylsham. Buxton is a substantial village sitting on the western banks of the River Bure, it lies about 2 miles east of the A140 road which connects Aylsham with the city of Norwich. At the time of this transcript Buxton would have been an arable farming community, albeit the Bure was navigable at this point so would have supported some employment in moving of goods along the Broadland rivers. Today Buxton is a thriving village with most of its services intact, modern developments have expanded the village almost to small town size. The Bure drains the parish southeastwards eventually reaching the North Sea through the port of Great Yarmouth. Buxton is sited at around 10 metres above the sea, local heights vary little in gentle landscape rising to just above 30 metres on the nearby A140. Buxton parish was fairly typically sized for Norfolk's Broadland, it covered just under 1,300 acres and would have supported a population of around 700 parishioners. In Domesday times Buxton was held by one Ralph of Beaufour and could offer 7 ploughs, small meadows & woodland (heavily populated with pigs) and a mill. |
