The ParishThe parish of Morston sits on Norfolk's northern coastline, albeit separated from the North Sea by the spit of Blakeney Point. Morston sits on the A149 coastal road about 5 miles east of the port of Wells-next-the-sea and a couple of miles west of the small port of Blakeney. Morston is a relatively small village sitting with its feet just above the salt marshes of the Norfolk northern coast, it would have had a split income stream at the time of this transcription, arable farming inland and grazing, wildfowling & fishing in the nearby Blakeney Harbour. Nowadays Morston earns much of its income from tourism, it is a delightful place for walking (the Norfolk Coastal Path passes through) as well as a base for visits by small boat to the seal colony on Blakeney point. Morston is drained by numerous small creeks which drain into the main channels of Blakeney Harbour just to the north. Morston sits at just 4 metres above the sea, an issue when winter storm surges sweep down the North Sea. Morston parish was of a fairly typical size for a Norfolk parish, it covered just over 2,100 acres and would have supported a population of around 170 parishioners. In Domesday times Morston was small indeed, it was shared between one Roger Bigot & the King, himself but could only offer a couple of ploughs. |
