The ParishThe parish of Sculthorpe lies in northwestern Norfolk. Sculthorpe is located about 2 miles northwest of the market town of Fakenham. Sculthorpe is a large village lying just north of the A148 road which links Fakenham to King's Lynn. The village is largely built around a triangular layout of lanes, with the A148 forming the base of the triangle. The area around Sculthorpe is nowadays almost totally arable although at one time there would have been pastures in the lower lying areas. Sculthorpe sits on a small tributary of the River Wensum which flows southeastwards to the city of Norwich and thence to the North Sea via the Yare. Sculthorpe sits at about 40 metres above sea level at the southern end of a ridge of higher ground (for Norfolk) running northwards towards the high downs inland of Norfolk's north coast. Large areas of the parish were commandeered during World War 2 to form an RAF base, the airfield is no longer in use by the military. Sculthorpe parish was of a fairly typical size for Norfolk, namely around 2,00 acres and supported in the region of 600 parishioners. In Domesday times the land was mostly held by one William of Warenne and supported 15 ploughs as well as 3 mills. Quite why the chronicler chose to list 12 wild mares among the parish assets is lost to history. |
