The ParishThe parish of Swanton Morley lies centrally within Norfolk and is located about 3 miles northeast of the market town of East Dereham. Swanton Morley is a large and quite linear village straggling along the B1147 road which connects East Dereham with Reepham. There are three villages of the name Swanton in Norfolk, this takes its suffix from the prominent Morley family with roots back to the 14th century. Whilst arable farming would have been the dominant economic activity, this would have been varied by some pastoral stocking along the flood plain of the nearby River Wensum, there was also some industry within Swanton Morley notably the manufacture of paper. Swanton Morley has long links to the Armed Forces, RAF Swanton Morley featuring prominently as a World War II air-base and more recently as the Army's base for the Light Dragoons, Robertson Barracks. The parish is drained eastwards by the Wensum which makes its way through the city of Norwich, joins the Yare and reaches the North Sea through the port of Great Yarmouth. Swanton Morley is sited at around 50 metres above the sea in an area that is at best gently undulating and largely a plain with local heights reaching little more than that height. Swanton Morley parish was larger than many parishes in central Norfolk, it covered over 2,600 acres and supported a population of almost 800 parishioners. In Domesday times Swanton Morley was held by one Ralph of Beaufour and was a wealthy place indeed, it could offer an impressive 25 ploughs as well as meadows, pig-infested woodland, 3 mills and a fishery making for a prosperous rural community. |
