The ParishThe parish of Tilney St Lawrence lies in the extreme west of Norfolk close to its border with neighbouring Lincolnshire. The two Tilneys (St Lawrence & All Saints) are located southwest of the port of King's Lynn Tilney St Lawrence being around 6 miles from King's Lynn. Tilney St Lawrence is situated just to the south of the busy A47 road which crosses Norfolk from east to west and runs through this area between King's Lynn and the Cambridgeshire market town of Wisbech. Much of Tilney St Lawrence is built around a crossroads of lanes about a mile south of the A47 but the village extends northwards towards the church and that road. The landscape hereabouts is largely flat and formed by man from reclamation of the Fens. The area is characterised by vast arable fields and market gardens, the characteristic smell of onions & leeks often hangs in the air. Virtually all drainage is man-directed with drains heading eastwards to join the canalised River Ouse and thence to exit to the North Sea through The Wash. Tilney St Lawrence is sited at between sea level and 3 metres above that level and there are few contours for miles around, the landscape sits flat under vast Fenland skies. The parish was fairly large for a Norfolk parish, it would have covered almost 3,500 acres and included detached areas of reclaimed land; the parish would have supported a population of around 750 parishioners. There is no specific mention of Tilney St Lawrence in Domesday Book. |
