The ParishThe parish of Faxton lies in central Northamptonshire about 6 miles west of the market town of Kettering. Faxton is a deserted village which has since largely disappeared from the maps. The former hamlet stands about 2 miles east of the A508 road which connects Brixworth through the Leicestershire market town of Market Harborough, today there are just a few scattered farms and a crisscross of footpaths marking the former site. At the time of this transcript the village was in sharp decline following enclosure of the main land to a few landholders, folk gradually left to seek their fortunes in other villages or in the towns and cities elsewhere in England. Faxton is drained southwards by small tributaries of the Nene which is joined at Northampton before turning eastwards to reach the North Sea through The Wash. Faxton was sited at around 130 metres above the sea and sat on something of a low ridge in rolling countryside, local heights reach barely 10 metres higher. The former parish was fairly typically sized for its county, it covered just under 1,800 acres and at the time of this transcript still supported around 100 parishioners. Despite its recent disappearance Faxton has a long history, in Domesday Book it is one of the King's own holdings offering 12 ploughs and a small meadow. |
