Glendon St Helen

The Parish

The parish of Glendon lies in northern Northamptonshire roughly 3 miles northwest of the market town of Kettering. Glendon sits just over a mile north of the busy A14 road which links the East Coast Ports with the main national motorway network. Glendon is no longer a village consisting purely of the estate of Glendon Hall with nothing other than farmland besides. Like most rural parishes in this area it's arable farming that sustains the local economy with broad fields of cereals dominating. A small brook drains the parish southwards, passing through Kettering to meet the River Ise which continues southwards to join the Nene at Wellingborough, here matters turn east for a long run to the North Sea arriving through The Wash. Glendon is sited at around 110 metres above the sea in gently rolling terrain where local high spots rise to 145 metres to the west of nearby Rothwell. Glendon parish was tiny, one of the smallest in its county and now defunct, covering just 772 acres it would have supported fewer than 50 parishioners. In Domesday times Glendon was little bigger, held by Grestain Abbey it mustered merely a single plough.

The Church

St Helen's church is first mentioned in documents dateable to 1254 but beyond early medieval times became ruinous as early as 1635. It's location is uncertain other than sitting close to its eponymous hall, burials were found beneath a neighbouring coach-house during excavations during a conversion in 2005. The church is believed to have been finally demolished in the 18th century so quite where these few marriages took place is uncertain.
