The ParishThe parish of Newburn is located in southern Northumberland, indeed it forms part of the border with neighbouring Durham. The parish is curiously shaped having a detached separate portion of almost equal size. The village of Newburn has been almost engulfed by the large port city of Newcastle Upon Tyne, there is a short stretch of green between the two but not much. The village is sited on the banks of the river Tyne to the west (about 5 miles) of the city centre and sited on the A6085 road which parallels the north bank of the river. The village is sited on a steeply sloping sight, the land rises from 4 metres at the river to over 50 metres above sea level in only a few hundred yards, giving fine views across the river to Durham beyond. The parish is notable for having a portion of Hadrian's Wall running through it although there is not much left to see above ground. The area is a mining area, there was abundant coal, as well as many manufacturing and river transport related industries. What agriculture was present was dominated by pastoral farming. The parish grew in population rapidly with the industrial revolution and by the times of this transcript supported in excess of 4,00 parishioners. Like most of the north of England Newburn received no mention in Domesday Book which did not cover this area. |
